2 Dead, 33 Land In Hospital Near Chennai After Sewage Got ‘Mixed’ With Drinking Water

Chennai: Two residents died, and 33 others fell ill due to suspected water contamination in Pallavaram, near Chennai. The deceased were identified as Thiruveethi (54) and Mohanarangam (43). The affected residents reportedly showed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea. The residents have alleged that the contamination was caused due to sewage mixing with drinking water pipelines.
Those who fell ill were admitted to Chrompet GH hospital for treatment. Some were treated as outpatients and discharged, while the rest were admitted. However, doctors have stated that the actual cause of death can only be determined after a post-mortem. Tambaram Corporation has collected water samples from the area for examination.
In separate incident, two young children died and their parents were hospitalised after inhaling rat poison fumes in their apartment in Kundrathur, Chennai.
The family had recently hired a pest control company to address a rodent issue in their home. However, later, the family members began to experience breathing difficulties and fell seriously ill. According to police sources, the family was affected by poisonous fumes while sleeping in an air-conditioned room treated by the pest control team.
Neighbours quickly rushed the family to a private hospital for treatment, but tragically, the two children—Vishalini and Sai Sudharshan—passed away. The parents, Giridharan and Pavithra, are currently undergoing medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of using chemicals in pest control without adequate precautions, especially in enclosed spaces.
