Karnataka minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar hurt in car accident near Belagavi

Karnataka Women and Child Development Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar was injured in a car accident near Ambadgatti on Tuesday while on her way to Belagavi after attending a late-night Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting in Bengaluru.

Her brother Chennaraj Hattiholi, a Member of the Legislative Council, who was also in the car sustained head injuries after their vehicle lost control and crashed into a roadside tree around 6 am.

Minister Hebbalkar suffered minor injuries to her face and waist, the police said. The injured are admitted to a private hospital in Belagavi and are reported to be in stable condition, they said.

The mishap occurred as the driver swerved to avoid a dog on the road, the police, adding that the airbags helped in minimising the severity of the injuries. Due to the unavailability of flights, Hebbalkar chose to travel by car, sources said.

“My mother has minor injuries, and my uncle sustained a slight head injury. They are both under care and recovering well,” Mrunal Hebbalkar, the minister’s son, said.
