In every season of the Indian Premier League, there is definitely some rule which is discussed a lot. One such rule has also been implemented in IPL 2025, which all the teams have used before the start of the tournament. This rule is related to the replacement of players. Just before the start of IPL 2025, replacement players are being included in many teams. Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Umran Malik failed to pass the fitness test of the National Cricket Academy and was ruled out of the tournament. Chetan Sakariya has been included in the team in his place. Mumbai Indians team also has fast bowler Corbin Bosch who has left PSL and joined the Mumbai team. Let us know how these players are getting entry into the teams before the tournament, know what are the replacement rules of IPL.

IPL replacement rules

The BCCI has made clear rules regarding replacement players. If a player suffers a season-ending injury or illness, teams can include new players in their place. This rule applies both before the season starts and during the season. According to the 2025 rules, players can be replaced during the first 12 league matches. Earlier this facility was available only till the 7th match.

There are two conditions for a replacement player. The first is that the player you are bringing as a replacement should be included in the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP). The second condition is that the fee of the replacement player cannot be more than the fee of the player in whose place he has been included in the team.

Salary cap and contracts

According to BCCI rules, the fees of replacement players are not added to the team’s current season’s salary cap. However, if their contract is extended for the next season, their fees will be added to the salary cap. Teams will have to follow squad rules and also keep the number of players within the prescribed limit. If the replacement player’s contract is extended for a future season, he will be treated like any other member of the squad.
