12-year-old student’s death: CM Atishi meets kin, orders magisterial inquiry

Chief Minister Atishi on Thursday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a 12-year-old boy in a south Delhi school and sought a report in three days, an official said.

Prince (12), a class VI student of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, died at his school on December 3 following a scuffle with his classmate over brushing of shoulders while returning to the classroom after attending morning assembly. Police have apprehended one of his classmates in the case.

Following the incident, Prince’s family members, his neighbours and relatives, and activists associated with the Left organisation protested outside the school premises demanding a “fair probe.”

“We have formed a committee under the Education Department to investigate the matter thoroughly. If any negligence on the part of the school is found, the strictest action will be taken against those responsible,” Atishi said while paying visit to deceased family members in Kusumpur Pahari in Vasant Vihar.

She also wrote a note to Chief Secretary Dharmendra, saying,”This is an extremely serious incident that raises questions regarding the safety and security of students who study in schools across Delhi.”

Later, in a post on X, the chief minister targeted the BJP-led central government over the law and order situation, alleging, “The way crime rate is rising in Delhi today, law and order has broken down. Violence, murder and firing have become common. This is affecting children as well. It is very worrying.”
