Pune women reject Ladki Bahin Yojana, demand Ladki Bahin Suraksha instead, prioritizing safety over economic schemes.

Pune women are demanding “Ladki Bahin Suraksha” instead of the “Ladki Bahin Yojana”, a scheme launched by the Maharashtra government to provide economic freedom to women. This demand comes after a horrific incident where a 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a stationary state transport bus at the Swargate depot in Pune.¹

The accused, Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, has a history of criminal activity and was out on bail since 2019. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with women’s groups and opposition parties criticizing the government for its failure to ensure women’s safety.

The “Ladki Bahin Suraksha” demand emphasizes the need for safety and security measures for women, rather than just economic empowerment. Women in Pune are seeking assurance that the government will take concrete steps to prevent such incidents and ensure their safety
